Description

Philodendron 'Florida' is a striking cultivar from the Arum family (Araceae). It is a hybrid of Philodendron squamiferum and Philodendron pedatum, both of which originate from the tropical regions of South America. The cultivar 'Florida' is often sold under false names such as Philodendron x joepii or Ph. pedatum. This climbing plant has become a popular choice for terrarium enthusiasts worldwide. It is characterized by its deeply lobed leaves, which are a rich dark green and have a glossy, leathery surface. The leaf stems are reddish-brown in colour and densely covered with small warts, making them rough to the touch.

This tropical Philodendron thrives optimally in high humidity, but also tolerates relatively dry air. It prefers indirect light, which makes it ideal for keeping in terrariums. Philodendron 'Florida' is relatively easy to care for as it has moderate water and nutrient requirements and is resistant to many pests and diseases. Its adaptability to different environments and low light requirements make it a versatile plant.

In the terrarium, Philodendron 'Florida' not only provides a lush, green backdrop, but can also flower with the right care and under optimal conditions, even if rarely in home care. The inflorescences have a white to soft pastel-colored spathe that surrounds the spadix with the actual flowers. Although they are rather inconspicuous, they form an attractive contrast to the dark green foliage and add an exotic touch to the terrarium. Its ability to climb makes the plant predestined for creative designs. It is ideal for tropical rainforest terrariums, but also thrives in various terrariums with moderate humidity.
