Description

Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' is a narrow-leaved, fast-growing knotweed from Asia. The plant is also commercially available as Persicaria sp. 'Red', Polygonum sp. 'Kawagoneum' and incorrectly as Persicaria sp. 'Sao Paulo'. Its species affiliation is still unclear. Many knotweed species occur amphibiously along and in water bodies and in alluvial soil, often on nutrient-rich mud. Under water, Persicaria sp. "Kawagoeanum" forms splendid orange-red to pink hues in good lighting. The leaves, which resemble willow leaves in shape, grow to about 8 to 12 cm long and 0.6 to 1 cm wide. In the terrestrial form the leaves are rather green in colour.

Like other Persicaria species, "Kawagoeanum" prefers a lot of light and above all a good macro- and micronutrient supply, also via the substrate. The addition of CO2 is beneficial. The shoots grow upright and branch moderately. The head shoots look most beautiful. Stems that have become long tend to become bare at the bottom and form many water roots. Shoots that have been cut back often only sprout weakly. If the shoots have become unsightly, they should be removed and the shoot tips replanted as cuttings.
If you do not cut back the shoots, they will grow out of the water and come into flower. The emersed culture is easy on moist, nutrient-rich soil. The older shoot sections lay down and take root at the nodes.

Persicaria sp. "Kawagoeanum" works best in the aquarium as a solitary group, no more than 30 - 40 cm high, in the middle ground, and with its beautiful light orange-red tones it forms a colour accent that contrasts especially with light green plants. As an emersed, flowering plant in open tanks, paludariums and wabi kusa, this knotweed forms a "scrub" with its own wild charm.

Persicaria (or Polygonum) sp. 'Kawagoeanum' (sometimes also called Polygonum sp. 'Pink') is a relatively new aquarium plant. It is still not quite clear which species it belongs to, it could be Persicaria kawagoeana (= Polygonum kawagoeanum) from East Asia, though. Like most knotweeds, it inhabits wet locations like bogs, ditches or riverbanks. It grows above as well as below the waterline.
Accordingly, Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' can be cultivated emersed as well as submersed. It is not regularly found in pet stores or online shops, and is usually more readily available from other hobbyists.

P. sp. 'Kawagoeanum' is often mistaken for Persicaria (Polygonum) sp. 'Sao Paulo', and it has been in trade under that erroneous name, too.
For differentiation, please see the description of Persicaria sp. 'Sao Paulo'.
