Description
This water knotweed entered the aquarium trade already longer ago under the name Polygonum sp. It is probably native to trpoical Asia and not yet determined to species. Persicaria sp. 2 is able to grow above and under water. Its lanceolate, up to more than 10 cm long submerged leaves show reddish to violet tones, especially with good lighting. Its stem grows upright under water.
Persicaria sp. 2 is moderately demanding and grows relatively fast. As well as other aquarium knotweeds, it should be well supplied with macro- and micronutrients, also CO2 addition is recommendable, as well as rather strong lighting. The stems are best planted with a bit of space to each other in a group. It is propagated by cuttings. Older, unsightly shoots with many water roots are best replaced by new cuttings of the shoot tip or side shoots.
With its red to violet tones, this knotweed species looks especially well as a free-standing group in the midground. It is also interesting for paludariums and Wabi-Kusa, however its emersed leaves are rather green.
