Description
Ludwigia glandulosa is one of the most colourful aquarium plants and is very different from many other aquarium Ludwigias. This species is a marsh plant from wetlands in south-eastern North America. It is often produced in aquatic plant nurseries under false names such as "Ludwigia perennis" or "Ludwigia peruensis". The strong shoots, which can grow to over 20 cm tall, usually grow upright under water and are hardly branched. In very strong light, they can also grow ascending, almost creeping, and then form many roots and side shoots at the base. The rigid stem is to over 3 mm thick. It is densely covered with lanceolate, 3 - 11 cm long, alternate leaves. Especially when there is a lot of light, the leaves are a strong wine-red colour, when there is less light they are more olive-green, but also have a wine-red underside.
Submerse Blattform der Ludwigia glandulosa
In the terrestrial form (emersed form), the plant can form long, woody, prostrate to erect shoots. These also form flowers and subsequently seed pods. The leaves on the flower shoots and also the flowers in the leaf axils are inconspicuous green.
Ludwigia glandulosa is more demanding than various other Ludwigias in the aquarium hobby and grows relatively slowly. Strong lighting, complete macro- and micronutrient supply via the water column as well as the substrate and CO2 addition are recommended. The temperature range is about 10 to 27 °C; 22 to 25 °C is optimal. It is best to plant a group of individual stems of different heights a few centimetres apart. Propagation is done by cuttings.Ludwigia glandulosa is a real eye-catcher in the aquarium midground as a free-standing, solitary group of shoots of different lengths up to about 20 cm high and forms a strong colour accent. It contrasts with light green plants. This species from the warm-temperate southeastern USA is particularly interesting for cooler tempered aquariums.
Two subspecies of the cylindric-fruited primrose willow, Ludwigia glandulosa (ssp. glandulosa and ssp. brachycarpa) are found in most of the southeastern states of the USA. To the north its area of distribution extends to Illinois and Indiana. It prefers wetlands, but also wet road ditches. Despite its large distribution it is considered endangered to critically endangered in Indiana and Louisiana.
In the trade, it is often found under the erroneous name of "Ludwigia perennis", which is not a synonym for L. glandulosa but the name of another species found in Asia, Africa and Australia. It is also often sold under the trade name of "Ludwigia peruensis", obviously deriving from "perennis".
L. glandulosa has lanceolate alternate leaves (1 leaf per node). (read more)
