Description

This small orchid is found in north-east India at the foot of the Himalayas and in Thailand. It grows as an epiphyte in mountain forests at an altitude of about 700 to 1.350 metres. Gastrochilus rutilans has a so-called monopodial growth habit. The plant forms a compact shoot with thick, greenish-grey aerial and adhesive roots, densely covered with narrow-lanceolate, about 10 - 16 cm long, leathery leaves. The inflorescences, about 4 cm long, sprout from the lower leaf axils with a dense cluster of 5 - 8 long-stalked flowers, about 1 cm in size. These have spatulate yellow petals with cherry-red spots. The lip has a fringed edge and is white with pink and orange markings.

Gastrochilus rutilans is a graceful perching plant for rainforest and tropical mountain forest terrariums, which attracts attention with its rather many small multicoloured flowers.
