Description
The cultivar name 'Tricolor' means 'three-coloured' and refers to the different leaf colours of this swordplant hybrid. It was bred in the Czech nursery Rataj and entered the market in 2004. The elongated, relatively firm underwater leaves have wavy, almost curly edges. When they sprout, they are a vibrant light yellow-green or pink with brownish spots, and later turn a darker green. The plant is often described as a compact Echinodorus cultivar that grows to a height of only 30 cm. This is true when it is grown in moderately lit aquariums without additional CO2 supply. However, with plenty of light and a generous supply of nutrients and CO2, it can grow to a height of more than 40 cm. After producing a number of submerged leaves, it can then develop very Long-petioled floating leaves and eventually aerial leaves.
The plant is usually sold in its emersed stage (terrestrial form) with dark green, long-stalked, elongate-ovate leaves. Only after planting in the aquarium does the submerged foliage sprout, and the old emersed leaves can be removed later.
Echinodorus 'Tricolor' is fast-growing, undemanding and tolerates hard water in the alkaline pH range. Nutrient-rich substrate, high CO2 concentration and strong lighting greatly promote growth, but also the aforementioned development of long-stalked floating and aerial leaves. If these are removed, leaves with Shorter petioles will initially sprout again. However, we particularly recommend this variety for moderately lit tanks without additional CO2 supply, where it usually maintains a moderate growth height. It is not uncommon for inflorescences to appear in the aquarium, on which striking white flowers and later adventitious plants develop./p>
This Echinodorus is one of the few sword plant cultivars that does not have red leaves, but rather light green to yellow ones. It looks best as a solitary plant in the middle ground.
Echinodorus 'Tricolor' was created in the aquatic plant nursery in the Czech Republic and was introduced to the hobby in 2004. The variety name (meaning three-coloured) refers to the different colours the leaves can attain.
The leaf blades are oblong-ovate with an obtuse tip, clearly reduced basis and a slightly undulate margin. They grow up to 15 cm long and 8 cm wide. The leaf stalks grow relatively long, up to 15 cm.
Young leaves are light green and may even have a pinkish hue as well as brownish dots. When they mature they attain a darker green colour.
This variety is rather easy in cultivation and grows well. It only needs medium light and even sprouts flower stalks with adventitious plants in the aquarium.
Under the name E. 'Tricolor', there is also another Echinodorus with band-like leaf blades in trade.

This plant came in excellent condition. Few days after planting the first yellow leaves started to emerge and it looks absolutely fantastic against darker Echinodorus bleheri. (read more)
