Oliver Knott: Which fertilizer for my aquarium?A recommendation for suitable fertilization
Especially in the field of planted tanks there is an unbelievable number of variants, depending on the aquarist’s aspirations, the technical eqiupment and of course the aquatic plants themselves. Oliver Knott gives some important tips on nutrient supply to the plants for different aquarium types.
In an aquarium with easy to keep aquatic plants, simple lighting and no CO2 system, Oliver Knott recommends a classic full iron fertilizer, e.G. the Aqua Rebell Mikro Basic Eisen presented in the video. In addition to iron, this liquid fertilizer contains other important trace elements such as manganese, copper, zinc, as well as the macronutrient potassium. The nutrients are stabilized by complexing agents so they stay available in the water for a prolonged period. For this reason, a weekly fertilization is possible with this product.
In planted tanks or aquascapes with moderate lighting and as additional CO2 system, Oliver Knott recommends supplementing the Aqua Rebell Mikro Basic Eisen with an NPK fertilizer (used here: Aqua Rebell Makro Basic NPK). This macronutritional fertilizer closes nutritional gaps in those elements needed by the aquatic plants in larger amounts. So it contains nitrogen, potassium, phosphate and magnesium.
In so called intense light aquariums with many fast-growing or also red stem plants it may happen, that especially the macronutrient nitrogen is used up such large amounts, that even when fertilizing with NPK fertilizer a shortage may arise. With intense lighting and corresponding CO2 fertilization, the aquatic plants are encouraged to grow quickly. A pure nitrogen fertilizer such as the Aqua Rebell Advanced GH Boost N, presented by Oliver Knott in the video, may be the proper remedy. It is an excellent supplement to the two liquid fertilizers Aqua Rebell Mikro Basic Eisen and Aqua Rebell Makro Basic NPK.
