Description
UNS Controsoil Black – Extra Fine is a high-quality soil substrate developed for planted aquariums and highly detailed aquascapes. The natural substrate consists of a mixture of soil and volcanic ash and provides ideal conditions for healthy plant growth. The very fine granule structure creates an exceptionally smooth substrate surface and allows delicate plant roots to anchor securely in the soil.
Unlike many heavily pre-fertilised aquarium substrates, Controsoil releases only small amounts of ammonium. This significantly reduces the risk of ammonia spikes during the cycling phase. At the same time, the substrate can absorb impurities from the water and supports the colonisation of beneficial bacteria that help establish a stable biological balance in the aquarium.
Controsoil also buffers the pH and can lower carbonate hardness (KH), creating slightly acidic water conditions that are ideal for many aquatic plants as well as shrimp and tropical ornamental fish. The “Extra Fine” granule size is particularly suitable for nano aquariums, delicate foreground plants and very detailed aquascapes where an especially smooth substrate surface is desired.
The substrate does not need to be rinsed before use and can be added directly to the aquarium. This allows planted aquariums to be set up quickly and easily while providing plants with a stable foundation for healthy growth.
For slightly larger foreground plants or layouts that require a bit more structure, the Black Fine variant offers a somewhat coarser grain size while still being ideal for foreground planting. For larger aquariums or plants with stronger root systems, the standard grain size Black Normal provides a more stable substrate structure. If a natural colour tone is preferred, the same fine grain size is also available as Controsoil Brown Fine.

Application
The substrate should not be rinsed before use. After setting up the aquarium, slight cloudiness may occur but will clear quickly through filtration and water changes.
Controsoil is added directly to the aquarium as a substrate and does not need to be rinsed beforehand. An even substrate layer provides plants with a stable base for rooting. During the initial cycling phase, regular water changes are recommended to stabilise the water parameters.

Cleaning
For maintenance of the substrate, it is recommended to regularly siphon off debris during water changes. The substrate should only be cleaned lightly at the surface to preserve the biologically active layers and beneficial bacteria within the soil.
