Description
Holcoglossum rupestre is a small to medium-sized orchid from China with an interesting and unusual appearance. It is native to mixed montane forests in northwestern Yunnan, at altitudes of 2000 - 2400 meters. It is described as a rock sitter (lithophyte) but also as an epiphyte on oaks. Also known as Vanda rupestris, this orchid forms an upright stem with many narrow, cylindrical, fleshy leaves, 12 - 28 cm long, as well as thick, grey-green aerial and clinging roots. In late spring, 2 to 10 flowers appear on an ascending inflorescence, 5 - 10 cm in length. These are white with a brownish-red and yellow marking in the centre.
This wild orchid species, originating from cool, damp mountain forests, is recommended for cool-temperate forest terrariums. Cooler, drier conditions in winter are beneficial. Mounted on wood or stone, on the back and side walls, Holcoglossum rupestre is a terrarium plant with a distinctive appearance. The elegant interplay of slender, rush-like foliage and wide-open flowers with quite broad petals makes this orchid a special focal point during its flowering period."
