Description

This colourful Ammannia is provisionally named after the nickname of an aquarist from the Netherlands. It resembles Ammannia gracilis but is not yet determined to a species. Also, its original provenance is unknown to us. While already Ammannia gracilis gets a magnificent brown-red colouration under favourable conditions, Ammannia sp. "Yme" develops a yet more intense red tone. In its emersed form, also as tissue culture plant, this Ammannia is rather green. It develops its pretty colours only under water. This plant is possibly already spread in the hobby under different names.

For Ammannia sp. "Yme", we recommend the same conditions as for A. gracilis: rather strong light and balanced macro- and micronutrient supply, also via the bottom. Rather soft water and CO2 addition are beneficial. It probably also has the same temperature preferences, best above 24 °C with a maximum at 32 °C, but this still has to be tested. It is best planted in a group by putting several stems of different length into the bottom, with some space to each other. As well as other stem plants, this Ammannia is propagated by cuttings of the stem tip and side shoots.

As well as other Ammannias, A. sp. "Yme" looks best as a group in the midground of not too small aquariums. With its strong, upright structure, it is well suited for "plant streets" in Dutch style planted aquariums. It contrasts strongly to light green plants. In open tanks, it readily grows out of the water, developing small purple flowers under strong lighting.
