Oliver Knott: Lily Pipes
In this short video, the renowned aquascaper Oliver Knott shares a couple of tips on how to properly handle filter in- and outflows made of glass. In the aquascaping jargon this glassware is called "Lily Pipe", again distinguishing between the filter inlet (inflow) and the filter outlet (outflow). Different outlet shapes produce different types of flow. The classic form, imitating a lily flower (hence the name "Lily Pipe") ensures a moderate flow of water in the aquarium. In this video, Oliver Knott also gives the right tips on how to easily pull a filter hose over a glass filter tube, without any risk of breakage. In the film, he refers back to the easy-to-use measure of simply heating the hose in a hot water bath. In our article "hose diameters and glass ware" we have covered this topic in more detail. In the end of the clip, Oliver Knott demonstrates the installation of inflow and outflow glassware into an aquarium. Depending on the position of the in- and outflows you can realize different water circulations in the aquarium. We know about lifting the Lily Pipe overnight from the ADA Gallery in Japan. The stronger surface movement provides better ventilation of the water at night, which can be quite beneficial. Because during dark phases, the aquatic plants can not perform photosynthesis and produce oxygen. On the contrary, oxygen is also consumed by aquarium plants at night. Lifting the Lily Pipe prevents an impending oxygen shortage.
If you raise the filter outlet temporarily, the so-called surface scum in the aquarium is driven out - another advantage. This visible film on the water surface often consists of microorganisms such as bacteria and algae. But also residues such as fats and proteins can be part of the scum. The increased surface movement caused by the raised Lily Pipe prevents the scum from forming a coherent carpet. Please keep in mind, that this method is CO2 powered, which may increase the ph-value. Especially in a planted tank, the carbon fertilization needs to be adapted accordingly during the day to compensate for the nightly minus.
