Description

This plant is usually traded as Tillandsia pulchella. Originally described as a separate species from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, T. pulchella has recently been included in the very variable species T. tenuifolia, which is why we label the plant Tillandsia tenuifolia "pulchella". T. tenuifolia is a "green" species of tillandsia and grows as an epiphyte on trees or lithophyte on rocks, especially in the humid tropics. The name tenuifolia refers to the thin, narrowed leaves. The form "pulchella" forms compact rosettes, while other tenuifolia forms often develop a longer, densely leafy stem. At flowering time, a slender inflorescence appears with bright pink bracts and greenish-white flowers.

Tillandsia tenuifolia "pulchella" belongs to the tropical rainforest tillandsias that are adapted to a more humid climate than the "grey" tillandsias. It prefers higher humidity of at least 60 %, good ventilation and should be protected from blazing midday sun when grown in daylight. The plant absorbs water and nutrients via the suction scales on the leaves, the roots serve as an adhesive organ. They are attached to hard materials such as stone or wood. Watering can be done both by dipping and by misting with soft water about three times a week. Constant wetness between the fine rosette leaves is not tolerated, the plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Ideally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small daughter rosettes at the base. These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they form a larger cluster with time.

This very graceful looking air plant with its pink inflorescences and fine leaves is a recommendable epiphyte for small to medium sized rainforest terrariums.
