Description

Tillandsia tenuifolia "Ruba" is a form of T. tenuifolia that originates from Bolivia, Paraguay and the low mountain ranges of Argentina. According to its name "tenuifolia" (Latin for thin-leaved), this green Tillandsia species has fine rosette leaves that appear less leathery and thick than those of many other species. The pointed leaves grow upright in a dense rosette. The variant "Rubra" has leaves with a slightly brown-reddish upper part.

This plant belongs to the green or rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid milieu than the so-named grey Tillandsias. It is fastened on solid materials such as wood or rock. The plant likes a bright place, but in daylight cultivation without blazing midday sun. It should be watered regularly with soft water. That can be done by dipping as well as by spraying, so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients via its absorbent scales. However, permanent wetness between the fine rosette leaves is not tolerated. The plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer. After the delicate rosy-white flowering, Tillandsia tenuifolia "Rubra" begins to form small pups. These can be detached carefully when they are about one third the size of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a dense clump.

This airplant, appearing very graceful by its contrasting colours and fine, upright growing leaves, reaches a maximum height of 25 cm and may stand out as a solitary plant on recreated mountain faces as well as in a group of Tillandsias with coarser foliage.
