Description

Tillandsia stricta is a species of green Tillandsia that is widespread in South America and occurs as an epiphyte on trees at almost all altitudes. It was described around 1813 by the British botanist John Lindley who was also significantly involved in the classification of the orchid family. According to its name "stricta" (Latin for stiff), it forms a dense rosette of about 15 - 30 cm with many stiff, differently curved, pointed leaves. On the surface of the rosette leaves, the suckering scales (absorbing trichomes) are clearly visible, which gives the lush rosette a look like fresh from the morning dew.

Tillandsia stricta belongs to the rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid milieu than the so-named grey Tillandsias. It is fastened on solid materials such as wood or rock. The plant likes a rather bright place, but in daylight cultivation without blazing midday sun (partial shade). Our plant is a soft-leaved variant that can turn slightly reddish in stronger light. It should be watered regularly with soft water. That can be done by dipping as well as by spraying, so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients via its absorbent scales. However, permanent wetness between the fine rosette leaves is not tolerated. The plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer. After the long-lasting, bright pink flowering, the Tillandsia stricta begins to form small pups. These can be detached carefully when they are about one third the size of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a dense clump.

With its bright pink, long-lasting and spike-like growing flower on a short inflorescence, this robust and many-faced Tillandsia species is very popular in terraristics.
