Description

Tillandsia seleriana is an unusual bromeliad from Central America. This large Tillandsia grows in mountain forests from southern Mexico to Nicaragua as an epiphyte on tree trunks, singly or in smaller tufts. The leaves are strongly spatulate at the base and form a false bulb. The leaf tips are bent upwards, hence the English name "Rhino horn". The individual plant is about 18 to 23 cm tall. Tillandsia seleriana is an ant plant (myrmecophyte); in natural habitats, specialised symbiotic ants nest in the pseudobulb. However, ants are not necessary for cultivation. After a few years, an inflorescence with purple flowers appears. After flowering, one or more pups form at the base before the mother rosette dies.

Tillandsia seleriana is classified as a "Grey Tillandsia". These "air plants" mostly come from drier places and absorb water and nutrients from rain, mist and dust completely via the many absorbent scales on the leaves, even from very humid air. The roots, if still present, serve as adhesive roots. In cultivation, such Tillandsias are tied or glued to solid materials such as wood or stones. The light requirement is high. Higher humidity is favourable, but the air must not be very humid all the time and stagnate, because the plants must be able to dry off. Therefore "Grey Tillandsias" are not well suited for rainforest terrariums, or they need a drier, well ventilated place in them. One sprays Tillandsia seleriana with soft water two to three times a week. Dipping is also possible, but no water should remain in the leaf sheaths of the false bulb. An orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser can be added with every second watering. Propagation is done by cutting off the pups.

Tillandsia seleriana sets an unusual accent with its large, thick, grey-green, velvety-scaled leaf rosettes. If you want to imitate its natural growth habit, attach it to a vertical trunk or piece of bark, with the leaf tips pointing upwards like a rhinoceros horn.
