Description
Tillandsia punctulata grows epiphytically widespread in the tropical and humid biome of many Central American countries. This particularly large and conspicuous tillandsia captivates by its filigree and long leaves from whose rosette large spike-shaped flowers rise.
T. punctulata belongs to the green or rainforest tillandsias, which prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey tillandsias. It is also not a typical "air plant" like the grey and also many green tillandsias, because it absorbs water and nutrients not only via absorbent scales on the leaves, but also via the roots. It can be cultivated as a perennial plant, but also on coarse substrate such as epiphyte soil in pots and as a ground plant. It prefers regular humidification and thrives best in a light to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. Waterlogging, especially when kept on substrate, but also between the fine rosette leaves is not tolerated. Optimally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small pups. These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a larger tuft.
This large tillandsia can be wonderfully integrated into large rainforest terrariums as it grows up to 25 - 35 cm high.
