Description
Tillandsia oerstediana is a large, magnificent rainforest tillandsia native to Costa Rica and western Panama. It occurs as an epiphyte on open, wooded slopes in humid tropical areas. The broad, grey-green leaves are arranged in a rosette up to about 40 cm wide. In the flowering season, a tall, conspicuous inflorescence develops with waxy yellow spikes and small, tubular, pink flowers.
T. oerstediana belongs to the green or rainforest tillandsias, which prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey tillandsias. It is also not a typical "air plant" like the grey and also many green tillandsias, because it absorbs water and nutrients not only via absorbent scales on the leaves, but also via the roots. It can be cultivated as a perching plant, but also on coarse substrate such as epiphyte soil in pots and as a ground plant. It prefers regular humidification and thrives best in a light to semi-shaded area, in daylight cultivation without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. Waterlogging, especially when kept on substrate, is not tolerated. Optimally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form daughter rosettes.
These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a larger cluster.
This large, green Tillandsia species makes an impressive appearance in a large rainforest terrarium, both as an epiphyte and as a ground plant. Especially when the pyramidal, yellow inflorescences appear, this bromeliad attracts attention.
