Description
Tillandsia ionantha is a species of Tillandsia from Mexico to Panama that occurs in altitudes up to 1800 metres. It grows as an epiphyte on trees in various dry to moderately humid habitats. This species is variable, and 'Fuego' is one of several selections. The cultivar name 'Fuego' is based on its quite strong red colouration of the upper rosette leaves, which also varies depending on the light conditions. As a unique contrast to the red leaves, the flowers are dark violet.
T. ionantha 'Fuego' belongs to the "grey" Tillandsias, also called "desert" or "dry" Tillandsias. It prefers a very light, airy place in the terrarium without permanent stagnant humidity.
These "air plants" take up nutrients and water exclusively from the atmosphere with the help of many small suction scales on their leaves. Its roots are only adhesive roots. The plant is fastened to solid materials such as wood or rock.
It is recommended to spray the Tillandsia two to three times a week dripping wet with soft water, it can also be drowned. It should be allowed to dry off between the waterings.
Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
As with almost all Tillandsia species, T. ionantha 'Fuego' also forms several pups at its base after flowering.
These can be carefully separated when they are about one third the size of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger tuft.
T. ionantha 'Fuego' can also find a place in smaller terrariums thanks to its height of only about 5 - 8 cm. With its unique appearance, it is both an eye-catcher and an accent to other plants.
