Description

This large, fine-leaved tillandsia, about 18 to 40 cm tall, is native to the Andes of Ecuador and Peru. It is found at altitudes of 900 - 2500 metres in rather dry habitats as an epiphyte on trees or sitting on rock (lithophyte). It is similar to T. juncifolia, but differs in flower characteristics, among other things. The leaves are light grey-green. At flowering time, a long-stalked inflorescence appears with a cluster of 2 - 5, rarely up to 13 red-coloured spikes. Blue-violet, tubular flowers with yellow stamens open on these. Because of its many flowers, the species was given the name Tillandsia floribunda by Humboldt, Bonpland and Kunth in 1816, which means "the rich-flowered Tillandsia". After flowering, the respective rosette of leaves dies off, but first forms doughter rosettes at the base.

Although Tillandsia floribunda originates from dry mountain habitats, it is not classified as a "grey tillandsia". It does not like overly dry cultivation conditions and is therefore even classed as a "green" or "rainforest tillandsia". Nevertheless, it is an "air plant" that absorbs water and nutrients completely via the many suction scales on the leaves, even from very humid air. The roots, if still present, serve as an adhesive organ. In cultivation, such tillandsias are tied or glued to solid materials such as wood or stones. The plant prefers plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. High humidity is favourable, but not constantly very humid, stagnant air; the plants should be able to dry off between waterings. Spray the plants dripping wet about two to three times a week with soft water. Dipping is also possible. An orchid and tillandsia fertiliser can be added with every second watering. Propagation takes place by separating individual sprouts or dividing the clump.

With its grass-like, grey-green leaf rosettes and red inflorescences, Tillandsia floribunda is a decorative epiphyte and rock-sitter in well-lit, not too dry terrariums. Even though this species originates from rather dry mountainous areas, it is suitable for bright, airy, ventilated places in rainforest terrariums.
