Description

Tillandsia filifolia is a medium-sized tropical Tillandsia species, first described in 1831 by Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal and Ludolf Karl Adelbert von Chamisso. It is native to Central America from Mexico to Costa Rica, at an altitude of 100 - 1800 metres, and grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests with dry season. T. filifolia forms a grey-green, dense leaf rosette with roundish outline. The about 7 cm long leaves are fine and thread-like, hence the name filifolia that means "thread-leaved". Favourable conditions provided, this Tillandsia grows into a spike that produces pale pink to pale purple flowers.

Although it comes from seasonally dry forests, T. filifolia is counted among the green or rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid milieu than the so-named grey Tillandsias. It is fastened on solid materials such as wood or rock. The plant likes a bright place, but without blazing midday sun if it gets daylight. It should be watered regularly, about 3 to 5 times per week, with soft water. That can be done by dipping as well as by spraying, so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients via its absorbent scales. However, permanent wetness between the leaf bases is not tolerated. The plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small pups at the base. These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.

Tillandsia filifolia can be cultivated especially well epiphytically in tropical, rainforest-like terrariums. The fine, narrow leaves are arranged in a bushy rosette and thus create an optical effect like small cushions that are distributed in the terrarium.
