Description

Most Tillandsias grow in nature as epiphytes on trees and shrubs. Tillandsia caulescens, however, grows in Peru and Bolivia on rocks in the mountains, so it is a lithophyte. However, it can also be kept as an epiphyte. This species is light to medium green with a slight grey tinge and about 20 cm tall. The narrow leaves are densely arranged rosette-like on a stem. Offsprings form on older parts of the stem, creating a tuft of several rosettes over time. The plant forms thin, tough adhesive roots with which it clings to the substrate. The slender inflorescences are deep red with small white flowers. After flowering, the respective leaf rosette dies off, but before that it forms offsprings (pups) at the base.

Tillandsia caulescens is one of the "air plants" that absorb water and nutrients completely via the many absorbent scales on the leaves, even from very humid air. The roots serve as adhesive roots. In culture, such Tillandsias are tied or glued to solid materials such as wood or stones. The plant likes a lot of light, but not direct sun. Higher humidity is favourable, but no permanently very humid, stagnant air; the plants should be able to dry off. Spray the plants with soft water about two to three times a week. Dipping is also possible. An orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser can be added with every second watering. Propagation is done by separating individual pups or dividing the bunch.

Tillandsia caulescens is a larger species with open rosettes of elegant, narrow leaves and also looks attractive with its red inflorescences and white flowers. According to its origin, it is particularly suited to terrariums with stone superstructures, but can also be attached to wood.
