Description

Tillandsia andreana is a filigree species of Tillandsia from the rainforest regions of Colombia and Venezuela. It was first described by Charles Jacques Édouard Morren, later in 1888 its species was officially published by Édouard-François André. Werner Rauh described this epiphytic plant as a "very beautiful species, vegetatively reminiscent of Tillandsia argentea, whose silver-grey leaves form a striking contrast to a bright red flower". It forms an about 8 - 10 cm high, dense, roundish rosette of needle-like leaves.

T. andreana belongs to the green or rainforest Tillandsias that prefer a more humid milieu than the so-named grey Tillandsias. It can be cultivated as a lithophyte (on stones) or epiphyte (on wood). The plant prefers rather moderate humidification and thrives best in light areas without direct midday sun. Watering can be by dipping or misting so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients through its absorbent scales. Waterlogging, even between the fine rosette leaves, is not tolerated. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer. After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small children. These can be carefully separated when they are about one third the size of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a larger clump.

T. andreana can reach quite a large girth and formed into a beautiful rosette. With its bright red flower, the tips of the entire plant also turn pink-red. The beautiful rosettes of Tillandsia andreana are a real highlight in every tropical and rainforest terrarium and formed a beautiful contrast to the usual dark green of such landscapes. With its bright red flower, the tip of the entire plant also turns pink-red.
