Description
Tillandsia 'Wavy Wonder' is a medium sized, about 25 cm tall hybrid of Tillandsia bulbosa and T. pseudobaileyi by Paul Isley, Tillandsia expert since the 1960s, author of specialist literature on Tillandsias and owner of Rainforest Flora Inc. in California, USA. While Tillandsia 'pseudobaileyi' is a grey and therefore "dry" Tillandsia, native from Mexico to Nicaragua, and Tillandsia bulbosa comes from the rainforests of Central to South America, 'Wavy Wonder' is one of the green or rainforest Tillandsias. Its undulating leaves have a spoon-like broadened base, forming a pseudobulb that resembles T. bulbosa more than T. pseudobaileyi.
As one of the green or rainforest Tillandsias, this hybrid prefers a more humid milieu than the grey Tillandsias. It is fastened on solid materials such as wood or rock. The plant likes a bright place, but without blazing midday sun if it gets daylight. It should be watered regularly with soft water. That can be done by dipping as well as by spraying, so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients via its absorbent scales. However, permanent wetness between the leaf bases is not tolerated. The plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
After flowering, the rosette begins to form small pups at the base. These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.
With its beautifully curved, slender leaves that grow larger than those of Tillandsia bulbosa, 'Wavy Wonder' is an ideal eye-catcher that can be used as an epiphyte in rainforest terrariums.
