Description
Tillandsia 'Double Ruth' is a hybrid of the species T. magnusiana and T. compressa by Paul Isley, Tillandsia expert since the 1960s, author of specialist literature on Tillandsias and owner of Rainforest Flora Inc. in California, USA. T. magnusiana (Mexico to Nicaragua) is a small desert or dry Tillandsia that can withstand long periods of drought and grows mainly at an altitude of 1100 - 2000 metres. T. compressa is a widespread species (Mexico to Colombia) that also belongs to the grey forms and grows in dry regions at an altitude of 500 - 2000 metres.
The cultivar 'Double Ruth' is a desert or dry Tillandsia and belongs to the "grey" Tillandsias. It prefers a very light, airy place in the terrarium without permanent humidity.
These "air plants" take up nutrients and water exclusively from the atmosphere with the help of many small suction scales on their leaves.
It is recommended to spray the plant two to three times a week with soft water.
Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
As with almost all Tillandsia species, T. disticha also forms several offspring at its base after flowering.
These can be carefully separated when they are about one third the size of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a puffy bulb.
Tillandsia 'Double Ruth' is a bushy plant which, if well cared for, forms a floral "plume", the inflorescence, from which its flowers sprout. In terrariums, the plant can be placed on rootstock, or similar substrate. With its silvery colouring, beautiful, contrasting plantings can be created.
