Description
The Seaside brookweed is a small, herbaceous plant from Europe, Asia and North America that belongs to the primrose family (Primulaceae). It is found in damp to occasionally flooded, often salty locations, usually near the sea coast, but also grows in fresh water. Under water, the plant forms a light green leaf rosette with obovate to spatulate leaves. It can then grow to around 10 - 15 cm high and 10 - 20 cm wide, but often remains smaller. In the land form and in very shallow water, an upright stem develops with small white flowers and seed capsules. Samolus valerandi has long been known in the aquarium hobby, also under the names Samolus floribundus and S. parviflorus.
Samolus valerandi grows slowly under water and prefers strong lighting, nutrient-rich substrate and cooler temperatures below 26 °C in the aquarium. It is well adapted to hard water, but will still grow in soft water. Naturally a brackish water plant, it even tolerates a salt concentration of 30 mg/litre. In very shallow water and also with long-day lighting (more than 12 hours per day), stalks may form. The plant is easy to keep in an emersed environment and also self-seeds.
This unusual, small rosette plant can be used as an accent in the foreground. Samolus valerandi is suitable for well-lit aquaria, especially cold-water and brackish-water biotope tanks, as well as for paludaria in its terrestrial form.
Seaside rivuletweed, or Samolus valerandi, is a small bog plant distributed in almost all the world. It prefers wet ground on and in fresh and brackish water. In Central Europe it can be found in brackish reeds near the coast, among others.
This plant has around 15 cm high light green spreading leaf rosettes. The leaves are oblanceolate to obovate and look a little like lamb's lettuce (Valerianella). The leaf tip is round, the margin runs down along the leaf stalk.
The flower stalks appear on emersed plants, grow to a height of 10 to 50 cm and carry alternate leaves that grow smaller to the top. They bring forth numerous tiny inconspicuous white flowers. The fruit are round capsules which have five caps that open and release many small seeds.
