Description

Rotala sp. "Cambodia" is a magnificent fine-leaved stem plant that is still relatively rare and little known. The trade name suggests that it was introduced from Cambodia. In the meantime it has been identified as a form of Rotala wallichii, but we will keep the name R. sp. "Cambodia" for the time being. It remains to be clarified whether it is the same as Rotala sp. "Enie".
This plant differs from the regular form of Rotala wallichii by its strikingly brown-red stem and is also easier to grow. It differs from the similar Rotala sp. "Vietnam" by shorter leaves and darker, more reddish tones. The shoots grow to over 40 cm long and about 3 cm wide. The soft stem is 1 mm thick and has very fine submerged leaves that are about 2 cm long and 0.6 mm wide. These are olive green to light brown-red, often also coloured in pink tones, and usually stand in whorls of eight at the stem nodes. The distance between the whorls is about 1 cm. The shoots branch moderately.

Submers

The requirements of Rotala sp. 'Cambodia' are similar to those of regular Rotala wallichii, the plant is quite fast-growing. Good macro- and micronutrient supply, CO2 addition, rather soft water and plenty of light are recommended. Temperatures of about 22 to 28 °C are beneficial. It is best to plant a group by inserting individual shoots or tufts of a few shoots into the ground with little distance between them. The stand can be easily shaped by pruning, which also promotes branching of the shoots and bushy growth. Propagation is easy by head cuttings and partial cuttings.

This Rotala rarity works best as a dense, about 20 - 40 cm high stand in the midground or background of an aquarium. It attracts attention with its fine texture and striking colours.
