Description
The colorful and rare orchid Renanthera monachica grows as an epiphyte on trees and also on mossy stones and wood in humid and hot landscapes of the Philippines. The plant forms erect, unbranched stems that can grow up to 1 m long. Several alternate shiny fleshy leaves up to 30 cm long and 3 cm wide adorn the base of this orchid. The showy flowers of R. monachica bear colours of bright orange and are spotted with fiery red. The fragrance is very subtle and sweet. The petals and sepals are long and narrow, giving the flower a delicate appearance.
R. monachica is an exceptionally beautiful orchid species that adds a special, colourful touch to any terrarium.
This orchid grows best in temperate rainforest or humid forest terrariums.
Note
The plant is supplied as a young plant, tied up on cork, and blooms only after about a year.
