Description

This pretty creeping plant is usually called Pellionia repens in the trade. Although Procris repens is a member of the Stinging nettle family (Urticaceae), like many other members of the family it has no stinging hairs. It is native to tropical Asia, from India and southern China (Yunnan) to Indonesia. There it is a caterpillar food plant for some butterflies of the genus Hypolimnas. The herbaceous plant grows on the ground in tropical and subtropical rainforests and humid forests. It forms branched, prostrate, trailing and also more or less climbing shoots up to about 60 cm long; the carpet can grow up to about 15 cm high. The somewhat fleshy, slightly zigzagging stems form roots at the nodes. The asymmetrical, elliptical to elongated leaves are similar to those of certain Begonia species, they sit in two rows in a dense sequence on the stem and are around 2.5 - 10 cm long. The younger leaves have a distinctive pattern reminiscent of the vein pattern on watermelon rinds. There are several differently patterned forms of Procris repens. The plant usually traded as Pellionia repens has a conspicuous silvery grey-green zone in the middle of the leaf, which merges into the purple-brown-green leaf margin with a dark vein pattern. The veins on the underside of the leaf are reddish in colour.

Like many tropical forest plants, Procris repens grows best in a loose, well-drained substrate that is kept moderately moist, but should neither become waterlogged nor completely dry. A higher humidity of over 50 % is recommended. The light requirement of this shade plant is not high, but it grows best in a moderately bright spot. If grown in daylight, it should be protected from direct sunlight. Once the plant is well established, it can be fed occasionally with a green plant fertiliser.

The Creeping Pellonia, a plant from the shady undergrowth of tropical primary forests in Asia, is ideal for rainforest terrariums and other enclosures with high humidity. It is primarily a ground cover that creates a visual highlight in dimly lit terrarium areas with its distinctive leaf pattern. Procris repens also climbs over stones, wood lying on the ground and on damp back walls or hangs down with its shoots from raised planting areas.
