Description
The Aluminium plant grows at the bottom of tropical and subtropical forests in southwest China and Vietnam. As an ornamental plant it is widespread and has also gone wild in other tropical areas of the world. Like many shade plants, Pilea cadierei has a striking silvery pattern on a dark green ground. The herbaceous stems grow to about 30 cm high and spread by branching on the ground, making the plant grow as a taller ground cover. The leaves are about 2,5-6 cm long. The many species of Pilea are mainly found in the tropics and belong to the nettle family. They are also called "artillery plant" because the stamens in the inconspicuous flowers throw the pollen away explosively as a small cloud.
Pilea cadierei grows in loose, humusy, slightly moist soil. This should neither dry out nor become waterlogged. This semi-shade plant does not need much light, but a bright spot without direct sun or strong lighting is optimal. If the stems stretch very much (etiolate) and thus look unattractive, the light is not sufficient. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a fertiliser for houseplants. Higher humidity of at least 60 % is favourable, but not a must. Temperatures are best at a minimum of 20 °C and can range between 15 and 30 °C. Propagation is done by cuttings.
Pilea cadierei is an ideal ground plant for rainforest or humid forest terrariums and can also grow on damp back walls and the like where the shoots tend to droop. It looks best as a larger stand in spacious terrariums. With its pretty silvery pattern on dark green leaves, it brightens up dark corners and contrasts in texture and colour with e.g. ferns and grass-like plants.
