Description
This climbing Philodendron is more commonly known as Philodendron scandens than by its now recognised name. Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium is native to tropical moist forests of Mexico and Honduras. The variety name oxycardium means "pointed heart" and describes the decorative leaf shape of the plant. The Climbing tree friend is a similarly popular, undemanding houseplant to the Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), but appears more delicate than the latter. The shoots grow several metres long and are moderately branched. This aroid is an adhesive root climber and also grows hanging and creeping on the ground.
This philodendron grows well in a loose soil that should neither dry out nor become waterlogged. It also thrives well in hydroponics. When well established, the plant can be given a houseplant fertiliser. High humidity is favourable, but not necessary. The Climbing Tree Friend still grows in low light, but becomes stronger in a bright, not full sun spot. Temperatures are best at at least 20 °C and should not fall below 15 °C for a long time. In a moist environment the roots will attach themselves to the support, otherwise the shoots must be attached where they are to climb. Propagate by head cuttings and partial cuttings; stems lying on the ground will take root at the nodes.
Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium is an ideal, easy and rather small-leaved climber that grows both in humid rainforest terrariums and in drier conditions. It can be used climbing, hanging or as a ground cover.
