Description

Peperomia quadrangularis is a particularly distinctive dwarf pepper species. It is widespread in tropical America from Costa Rica and the Caribbean to eastern Brazil and grows in moist tropical forests as an epiphyte (on trees) or lithophyte (on rocks). Its thick, about 1,2 to 3 cm long, elliptical leaves have parallel, yellow-green longitudinal veins. The shoots grow overhanging to prostrate.

Peperomia quadrangularis grows well in a loose, humusy soil that should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. However, some temporary dryness is tolerated. When the plant is well rooted, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. As an epiphyte, this dwarf pepper is a humus rooter and needs an appropriate substrate. A bright, but not full sun place is preferred. About 18-25 °C is favourable. The plant can be propagated by cuttings.

The Beetle Peperomia, often labelled as Peperomia angulata in the trade, can be used in rainforest terrariums as a creeping or hanging epiphyte, on back walls or also as a ground plant. P. quadrangularis is a pretty eye-catcher with its small, yellow-green longitudinally striped leaves.
