Description
Peperomia obtusifolia is widespread in warm America, from Florida and Mexico to southern Brazil. It grows there in drier to moist subtropical to tropical forests, often on rotting wood and humus. With its round, succulent leaves about 5-10 cm long on a thick stem, the Fleshy Peperomia is a popular houseplant. The cultivar 'Variegata' has white variegated leaves, while the wild type is pure green. The plant grows ascending to creeping and can reach a height of about 15-30 cm, but usually remains lower. Occasionally, thin, whitish flower spikes may appear on brown-red stems.
Peperomia obtusifolia 'Variegata' grows well in a loose, humusy soil that should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. However, some temporary dryness is tolerated. When the plant is well rooted, it can be supplied with a fertiliser for houseplants. It tolerates dry air. A bright, but not full sunny place is preferred. The most favourable temperatures are around 18-24 °C. The plant can be propagated by head cuttings.
This Peperomia is a simple terrarium plant and creates a striking accent on the terrarium floor with its round, white-patterned leaves. It is suitable for various moister or drier terrarium types. Peperomia obtusifolia can also be used as an epiphyte, but is a humus rooter and needs an appropriate substrate for epiphytes.
