Description

This orchid with magnificent flowers and peculiar leaves is also known as Vanda teres. It is distributed frmo India and Nepal to southwestern China, Vietnam and Thailand, growing as an epiphyte on trees at edges of humid tropical to subtropical forests. The plant has a so-named monopodial growth habit. The about 5 mm thick stem grows climbing, branched, whith aerial and adhesive roots arising from the nodes. It may get up to 2 m long. The leaves are stalk-like, terete, about 3 - 4 mm thick and up to about 11 cm long. 15 - 30 cm long inflorescences with about 3 - 6 flowers appear in the leaf axils. The name Papilionanthe, "butterfly flower", refers to the striking, 7 - 10 cm wide flowers whose parts exhibit white, pink, purple and orange tones.

Papilionanthe teres is a remarkable epiphytic orchid for rainforest and subtropical humid forest terrariums. It forms a climbing to drooping thicket with stalk-like, rather dark green foliage which lets the pretty flowers appear even more conspicuous.
