Description

Neoregelia 'Zotica' is a small, very decorative bromeliad cultivar. It is said to be a hybrid of Neoregelia species, but we have no information about its origin. The leaf rosettes are only about 8 cm tall and are taller than they are wide. They form stolons and thus a colony of several rosettes. The leaves have a contrasting pattern of brown horizontal stripes on a green background. Like other Neoregelias, the plant forms a cistern or funnel in the centre of the rosette in which water can collect. Purple-white flowers appear in the funnel of fully-grown leaf rosettes. Unlike various other bromeliads, the leaf rosettes live on for a long time after flowering and form further runners.

This bromeliad is primarily an epiphyte, ideally with some substrate such as moss. It can also be planted in pots, but only with a permeable, well-drained substrate that should never become waterlogged. Water with soft water, e.g. by sprinkling, and add a little water to the funnel in the centre of the leaf rosette. The substrate should be allowed to dry off between waterings. An orchid and tillandsia fertiliser can be added with every second watering. Temperatures above 15 °C, preferably at least 20 °C, are recommended. Higher humidity above 60 % is favourable, as is air movement. This bromeliad grows in moderate light or partial shade, but plenty of light promotes compact growth and high-contrast markings. If grown in daylight, however, it should not be exposed to full midday sun. Propagation is achieved by separating runner plants when they have reached around a third of the size of the mother rosette.

This dwarf bromeliad variety is well suited to small containers, as an epiphyte, on side and back walls and as a ground plant on moss. However, a colony of many rosettes on an epiphyte branch in larger tropical terrariums makes a particularly beautiful, natural impression.
