Description
Neoregelia "Purpurea" is a selection of the bromeliad genus Neoregelia. It is a stemless funnel bromeliad. Neoregelia species are mostly epiphytes, native to humid, tropical regions of South America. The linear-lanceolate leaves of N. "Purpurea" are reddish to brown banded and dotted, which makes this plant particularly attractive. The spiny leaves are about 2,5 cm wide and about 10 - 15 cm long. This bromeliad forms a rosette, which in turn forms a funnel. The funnel collects water and enables the bromeliads in their natural habitats to survive even longer dry periods. This funnel water should be replenished at regular intervals outside the flowering period (June - August), but should be changed every 3 to 4 weeks so that it does not become putrid. Neoregelia 'Purpurea' bears flowers that are sunken into the rosette and often purple when in flower.
Unlike many other bromeliads, the mother rosette does not die immediately after flower and daughter plant formation. Without any intervention, the pups and mother thus grow together to form a pretty and voluminous clump.
But the pups can also be carefully removed and separated when they are about a third of the size of the mother plant.
