Description

Neoregelia 'Amaranda' is a medium-sized rainforest bromeliad that captivates with its clear, green funnel-forming rosette leaves. It has typically spiny leaf margins that taper to a rounded end where they form a short, twisted spiny tip. The Neoregelia wild forms are native to rainforests in tropical South America and live mainly epiphytic and only rarely terrestrial.

The centre of the leaf rosette forms a funnel (also called a cistern) in which water collects. Once in the life cycle of a rosette - i.e. monocarpic - a nesting, very short inflorescence develops in the funnel. The many small flowers open successively. After the long-lasting flowering period, small pups form at the base of the rosette, which can be carefully detached when they are about a third of the size of the mother plant. As the mother rosette dies immediately after flowering, the children can also grow together as a strong cluster if they are not separated.

This broad-leaved and inconspicuously coloured bromeliad is excellent for rainforest terrariums, but can also be kept as a houseplant with appropriate care.
