Description
Neoregelia 'Ajax' is a medium-sized funnel bromeliad with typically rounded leaf tips that then taper to a short spiky tip. Its leaf margins bear fine spines, which contrast the rest of the rather green rosette leaf with their beautiful red blush. At the base of the rosette, the leaves are also coloured red on both the under and upper sides. Occasionally, small red spots can appear on the leaf. The Neoregelia wild forms are native to rainforests in tropical South America and live mainly epiphytic and only rarely terrestrial.
The centre of the leaf rosette forms a funnel (also called a cistern) in which water collects. Once in its life cycle - i.e. monocarpic - this bromeliad develops nesting, very short inflorescences in the funnel. The many small flowers open gradually. After the long-lasting flowering period, small pups form at the base of the rosette, which can be carefully detached when they are about a third of the size of the mother plant. As the mother rosette dies immediately after flowering, the children can also grow together as a strong clump if they are not separated.
This narrow-leaved and inconspicuously coloured bromeliad is excellent for rainforest terrariums, but can also be kept as a houseplant with appropriate care.
