Plants of the genus Hygrophila which are cultivated emersedly can occaisonally show small, firm tissue overgrowths ("pustules") on their upper and lower leave side. These are completely harmless and not caused by pest infestation or disease. On newly sprouted submerged leaves these spots will no longer appear.

Description

This broad-leaved form of Hygrophila corymbosa is long known in the aquarium hobby, also known as Temple plant, Nomaphila corymbosa and Hygrophila stricta. It comes from swampy places in Southeast Asia and grows above and under water.

This strong stem plant is fast growing, undemanding and recommendable for beginners, however it's best placed in large, high tanks. It does not need strong lighting and grows also in hard, slightly alkaline water. A nutrient-rich substrate enhances its growth.
Emersed plants of H. corymbosa and other Hygrophila species from aquatic plant nurseries not infrequently have small "pimples" on the leaves, some of which have a sand-like feel. The cause of this is not known to us. These pustules probably occur under certain emersed culture conditions, but not on underwater leaves. One can therefore put such plants into the aquarium without hesitation; the newly developed submerged shoots no longer have these small bumps.

Hygrophila corymbosa is often used for "plant streets" in Dutch style tanks, it can also form a large, dense, branched bush when it is regularly pruned. It looks also well as half-emersed plant in open tanks where it develops many light purple flowers.
