Description
This narrow-leaved, grass-like orchid with many tiny colourful flowers is native to the south-east of Brazil. It grows in the Atlantic coastal forests up to about 400 m altitude, as an epiphyte in shady places. The climate there is humid, warm to hot with a drier period in the southern winter from May to September. A dense bush of many small pseudobulbs develops on a compact rootstock with adhesive and aerial roots, usually with four leaves, two at the base and two at the tip. The grass-like narrow leaves are up to about 10 cm long and 2 mm wide. In summer and autumn a number of flowers about 0,7 - 1 cm high appear on inflorescences up to 20 cm long. The various flower parts are white, purple, greenish, orange-yellow and violet-brown in colour.
Gomesa radicans is a graceful, small perching plant for humid tropical terrariums, preferably those with a drier, cooler winter period. It fits into smaller containers, where its fascinating flower details also come into their own.
