Description
The Flame violet is a particularly pretty ground plant from the tropical rainforests of South America and belongs to the Gesneriad family. Episcia cupreata has wrinkled leaves up to 12 cm long with silvery markings. The stems lie down and spread over the ground. The tubular flowers are scarlet to orange with yellow inside.
Episcia cupreata grows best in loose, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil that is kept moderately moist and must not become waterlogged. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. Higher humidity above 60 % and temperatures between 20 and 25 °C are favourable. Episcia cupreata is a semi-shade plant and is best placed in bright light, but not in full sun if grown in daylight.
The Flame violet is ideal for rainforest terrariums and other closed containers such as biOrb, where it attracts attention with its special leaf texture and patterning and with its eye-catching flowers.
