Description
Various cultivars of the Venus flytrap from the Atlantic coastal plain of the USA have been selected in cultivation. Particularly striking is "Red", which colours completely red and can also take on brown-red tones. The prerequisite for this coloring is strong lighting, also a sunny position for daylight cultivation. The leaf blade on the very widened leaf stalk is formed as a hinged trap. When sensory bristles on the leaf surface are irritated, the trap halves quickly fold together. Captured animal prey such as insects and spiders are digested by enzymes, and cells of the trap leaf absorb the nutrients released. As with the related Drosera species, an erect inflorescence can develop. The flowers are white in colour.
The requirements of Dionaea muscipula are comparable to those of sundew species: acidic, nutrient-poor substrate such as a fibric peat and sand mixture or customary carnivorous plant soil, which is kept moist to wet with soft water (e.g. rainwater or reverse osmosis water). Occasionally caught insects cover the plant's nutrient requirements. Plenty of light ensures the attractive colouring of the trap leaves. The humidity should not be too high in closed containers. Cool dormancy at around 5 - 10 °C is an advantage, but it is recommended that very young plants, e.g. from tissue culture cups, are cultivated at room temperature and only overwintered in a cool place later as larger plants.
This deeply red selection of Dionaea muscipula is an eye-catching appearance as a single plant or in small groups, which fascinates with its trap leaves. It is recommended for well-lit subtropical terrariums that are inspired by bog biotopes and can harbour other carnivorous plant species.
