Description

Dendrobium anosmum is a stunning orchid from tropical Asia. This species is widespread in Sri Lanka and in South-East Asia from Myanmar to Indonesia and the Philippines. It grows in tropical humid forests as an epiphyte on trees or sitting on rocks (epilithic). On a short rhizome with aerial and adhesive roots, a number of long, arching to hanging shoots (canes) develop, which are covered with many elongated leaves. During the dry season (winter months) the leaves become yellow and are shed and in spring up to 10 fruity-scented flowers, which last about 4 weeks, appear at the nodes of the bare canes. The species name D. anosmum literally means "Scentless Dendrobium" because the species was described after a scentless variety. In fact, however, plants with a flower scent are usually cultivated. The orchid is called Sanggumay in the Filipino language Tagalog after this scent.

We supply young plants approximately 10 cm in size. It is a deciduous orchid, which means that the leaves may have more or less turned yellow or already fallen off during the winter months. The plant is then dormant. In spring, it produces new, leafy shoots.

Dendrobium anosmum 'Alba' is recommended as a perching plant on branches, trunks, rocks, back and side walls in larger tropical terrariums where there is enough space for the hanging canes. This wild type orchid is a breathtaking sight when in flower.
