Description
This Cryptocoryne is an attractive and highly recommended foreground to midground plant. It grows rather slowly and is fairly undemanding. Although it is sold under the trade names Cryptocoryne "pigmea", "pygmea" and "Pygmi", it is not the species Cryptocoryne pygmaea from the Philippines. Instead, it belongs to the Cryptocoryne x willisii group from Sri Lanka and is similar to the forms sold as "Cryptocoryne nevillii". Its dark green submerged leaves are broadly lance-shaped, with the leaf margins in particular often showing a dark brownish-red colour. According to several aquatic plant nurseries, it does not grow taller than 5 cm under suitable lighting conditions.
Like most Cryptocorynes, Cryptocoryne x willisii "Pygmi" spreads by underground runners, gradually forming a dense clump or carpet. At least moderate lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate are recommended. This water trumpet has no special water parameter requirements and also grows well in moderately hard water. While added CO2 encourages stronger growth, it is not essential.
With its fairly dark, slightly reddish-brown colouring, Cryptocoryne x willisii "Pygmi" provides an interesting contrast to light green foreground and midground plants. It can be used either as a small, dense group or as an extensive carpet.
