Description

This Cryptocoryne is a nice, recommendable plant for the fore- and midground; it is slowly growing and rather undemanding. It is sold under the trading name Cryptocoryne "pygmea", however, it is not the species Cryptocoryne pygmaea from the Philippines but belongs to the Cryptocoryne x willisii complex from Sri Lanka. The dark green submerged leaves are broadly lanceolate, and especially the leaf margin tends to dark, red-brown coloration. According to information given by the company Anubias it does not grow larger than 5 cm in height under good light.

Like most Crypts it reproduces by underground runners, thus forming a small group or a lawn with time. At least medium lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate are recommendable. It does not have special demands on the water parameters and also grows well in medium-hard water.

With its quite dark, slightly red-brown coloration, Cryptocoryne x willisii "pigmea" provides an interesting contrast to light green foreground and midground plants. It can be used as a small dense group or an extended turf.
