Description
The earth star or hiding flower is a small earth bromeliad from eastern Brazil, where it grows at the bottom of tropical forests. The leaf rosettes are about 10-15 cm wide and the plant reaches about 15 cm in height over time. Occasionally groups of small white flowers appear in the middle of the leaf rosette. There are various selections of Cryptanthus bivittatus. "Red" has strong pink longitudinal stripes.
As a semi-shade plant, Cryptanthus bivittatus does not need much light and likes higher humidity. A loose, humus-rich substrate with good drainage is recommended. It should be kept moderately moist, can also become a little drier, but never dry out completely. After the plant has grown in, it should be fertilised lightly with every second watering, for example with an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser. If the plant only gets daylight, fertilise less frequently or not at all in the darker autumn and winter. In time, the plant will form children that can be detached for propagation.
The various forms of Cryptanthus bivittatus are ideal ground plants for rainforest terrariums. With their small, spreading leaf rosettes, which are somewhat reminiscent of starfish, and distinctively marked and coloured leaves, they are an eye-catcher in the terrarium.
