Description
UNS Controbase is a nutrient-rich substrate additive for planted aquariums. The porous pumice-based granules are placed as a base layer in the substrate and support especially heavy root-feeding aquatic plants in nutrient uptake.
The granules have a grain size of approximately 6–8 mm and, thanks to their open and porous structure, improve water circulation within the substrate. This creates favourable conditions for beneficial microorganisms that support the biological balance in the aquarium and promote healthy plant growth.
Controbase is enriched with essential plant nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and trace elements. These nutrients are slowly released over several months and remain continuously available to plants through their root systems.
The substrate is supplied in practical mesh bags. These allow easy placement in the aquarium and enable simple removal or reuse if required. The bags can also be stacked to create different substrate heights and natural layout structures within the aquarium.
For best results, Controbase should be covered with an appropriate aquarium substrate such as soil, sand or gravel. It is particularly effective when combined with active soil such as UNS Controsoil Black (Normal), creating a powerful nutrient base for planted aquariums.

- Suitable for freshwater aquariums only
- Controbase must be completely covered with substrate
- Nutrient effect lasts approximately 3 months
Application
Controbase is used as a nutrient base layer in the aquarium and should always be covered with a substrate such as soil, sand or gravel.
- Place the mesh bags in the aquarium (avoid placing them directly against the glass panels)
- If required, stack multiple bags to create height in the layout
- Then cover with aquarium substrate such as soil, sand or gravel
- Afterwards plant the aquarium
Controbase is particularly effective when combined with active soil such as UNS Controsoil Black (Normal), creating a powerful nutrient base for demanding aquascapes.
