Description

Tillandsia x rectifolia is a natural hybrid of T. ionantha and T. schiedeana. It has been found in central Mexico as well as in Costa Rica, where both widespread parent species also occur. The plant occurs as an epiphyte on trees. It forms a slimmer, approx. 10 cm high rosette of straighter leaves than T. ionantha. At flowering time short inflorescences appear with red bracts and tubular flowers that are pinkish-purple at the base and cream-coloured in the upper part. The upper rosette leaves turn reddish at flowering time, similar to T. ionantha.

Tillandsia x rectifolia is classified as a "grey tillandsia". These usually come from drier, more exposed places than the so-called green tillandsias. They often grow higher up in the treetops, in dry forests or even in deserts with a lot of fog. These atmospheric plants absorb water and nutrients from rain, mist and dust completely via the many absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots, if still present, serve as an adhesive organ. In culture, such tillandsias are tied or glued to hard materials such as wood or stones. The species prefers a very light, aery place. Spray the plants with soft water about two to three times a week. Dipping is also possible. After watering, the plant should be allowed to dry. Ideally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.

Like almost all tillandsias, T. x rectifolia also forms several daughter rosettes at its base after flowering. These can be carefully separated from the mother plant when they reach a size of about one third. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger cluster.

The rather small Tillandsia x rectifolia can be wonderfully integrated as an epiphyte into a small to medium-sized dry forest, dry bush or savannah terrarium. It is particularly attractive at flowering time with its contrasting red and creamy white shades.
