Description

Tillandsia magnusiana is a fine-leaved, small grey Tillandsia, also known under names such as Tillandsia plumosa and T. plumosa var. magnusiana. This species originates from Mexico to Nicaragua. There it grows in altitudes of about 1.100 - 2.000 m as an epiphyte on trees, mostly in oak and pine forests. T magnusiana was described in 1901 by the German botanist J. Magnus von Ludwig Wittmack who named it after his own second forename. It forms a roundish rosette with a diameter of about 15 cm, with numerous soft, silvery leaves that are densely set with scales. Under favourite conditions, the rosette may develop a short, purple inflorescence.

Tillandsia magnusiana belongs to the "grey" Tillandsias, also called dry or "desert" Tillandsias, that are more adapted to drought that the so-named green or rainforest Tillandsias. These "air plants" absorb nutrients and water exclusively with the help of the many small suction scales on their leaves. The roots are specialised adhesive roots. The plant is fastened to solid objects such as wood or rock. It prefers an airy place in the terrarium without permanent humidity. Its place should also be bright. It can be more or less sunny in daylight cultivation, but this plant does not like direct midday sun. It is recommended to spray the Tillandsia with soft water two to three times a week. It can also be drowned. Between the waterings, the plant should be allowed to dry off. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
As with almost all Tillandsia species, T. magnusiana also forms one or more pups at its base after flowering. These can be carefully separated from a size of about one third of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.

Tillandsia magnusiana is a rather small plant that appears like a small bush with its thin leaves. It is the ideal plant for terrariums that are oriented towards drier, light montane forests. It can be easily grown in any location.
