Description
Tillandsia ionantha 'Rosea' is an intriguing variety of the widespread Tillandsia ionantha, an air plant known for its small size and showy flowering. Originally from the forests of Central America, this plant has become a popular choice due to its adaptability and low maintenance requirements. 'Rosea' is characterised by its vibrant green leaves, which turn an impressive pink to red colour when flowering, giving it a particularly decorative appearance. This tillandsia forms dense rosettes and usually only reaches a height of a few centimetres, which makes it ideal for smaller terrariums. Keeping Tillandsia ionantha 'Rosea' in a terrarium is relatively easy, as it mainly requires humidity and indirect light for its growth. This plant prefers high humidity and should be sprayed regularly to prevent it from drying out. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the leaves.
The flowering period of 'Rosea' is particularly spectacular, as the plant develops bright purple flowers that emerge from the centre of the rosette. These flowers stand in stark contrast to the discolouring leaves and provide a fascinating spectacle. Due to its compact size and striking colour changes during the flowering period, Tillandsia ionantha 'Rosea' is ideal for terrarium design, where it provides lively colour accents either individually or in groups.
