Description

The Hairy-stemmed Rhipsalis a particularly attractive species among the mistletoe cacti. Rhipsalis pilocarpa is native to very scattered places in south-eastern Brazil. The species grows as an epiphyte on tree branches, rarely on rocks, in periodically dry tropical forests at about 500 to 900 metres above sea level. It is endangered in the wild, but is easy to cultivate and propagate. This about 10 to 20 cm tall, shrubby cactus grows upright at first, later overhanging. The shoot limbs are grey-green, partly purple tinted, cylindrical and up to about 4 cm long and 0.6 cm wide. Side shoots appear in whorls. The areoles have hair-like, white bristles. When grown in daylight, the plant usually flowers in late autumn, with pretty white, sometimes also yellowish or pinkish tinted flowers about 2 cm wide. The fruits look berry-like and are wine-red.

Rhipsalis pilocarpa is not very demanding; like many epiphytes, this cactus grows well in loose, humusy, neutral to slightly acidic, calcium-poor substrate, in special epiphyte soil as well as in normal potting soil. It can be tied up or used as a pot plant. The watering water should be soft and temperate. The substrate is kept slightly moist; in daylight cultivation, drier conditions from autumn onwards encourage flower formation. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. A bright, but not full sun location is recommended. Temperatures are best above 20 °C and should not fall below 15 °C for a long time. This cactus can be trimmed as desired. It is easy to propagate by head cuttings, best in early summer if grown in daylight.

This relatively small coral cactus from Brazil attracts attention with its strongly branched, drooping shoots and white, accumbent, hair-like thorns, especially when it adorns itself with its handsome flowers. Rhipsalis pilocarpa suits terrariums that mimic periodically dry forests particularly well, on branches, stones and other raised planting places such as back walls.
